Scotland lost to Samoa by 7-38 in George, South Africa, this morning in the opening match of the second tournament of the IRB Sevens World Series.

The Scots had a good start with Colin Gregor scoring the opening try of the match. He also converted it, but Samoa countered with three tries in each half, leading 21-7 at the interval.

Stephen Gemmell, the Scots' coach, briefly summed up the defeat: "Too many missed tackles, and the work rate wasn't high enough.

"Later today Scotland take on Australia and then Tunisia. Those two teams had a 12-all draw in the match immediately following the Scotland v Samoa game.

That result revived the Scots' hopes of going into the Cup quarter-finals tomorrow. "Qualification is still in our own hands, the coach commented.
