Morgan Women: The Season So Far

With the year drawing to a close, it's time to look back over Morgan Women's achievements in 2007.

With the year drawing to a close, it's time to look back over Morgan Women's achievements in 2007.

Beginning with a handful of ladies interested in starting a women's team in Dundee, we were staggered by the level of interest and support offered by Morgan Rugby Club as far back as the early stages of discussion back in June.

Thanks to local sporting events, such as Touch Dundee, as well as local advertising, our come and try session in August was very popular, with the majority of participants joining the club.  Since then, our numbers have continued to grow, confirming the necessity for a Dundee women's rugby team outside the usual university leagues.

Morgan Women joined the SWRU National Development League, which was set up for new teams as well as teams that were unable to make a full 15. The latter, however, has never been a problem for Morgan, with a consistently high turn out of available players regardless of venue. In fact, and the NDL fixtures held in Dundee are an example of this, Morgan has fielded both a first and a second team.

On the 9th of December, we expected to attend a tournament held at Cartha Queens Park in Glasgow, but sadly this was cancelled. Therefore, to round up this year:

Played: 10
Won: 6
Drawn: 2
Lost: 2
Points for: 70
Points against: 22

Based on this, and if player numbers are maintained, we shall be looking to be promoted to the SWRU National Division next year. Obviously this will be a much more demanding season and preparations are already under way to ready the team for this challenge, which gives me the opportunity to thank our coaches, Grieg Mason and Ian Cavanagh for their hard work and patience over the last few months. We presented them both with a coach kit at the Dundee Development Day in November, but the stopwatches and whistles may have to be confiscated, as they are making us work all the harder because of them!

Our next NDL Fixture is to be held on the 20 January in Edinburgh, hosted by RDVC at Peffermill playing fields - any travelling support will be welcome.

Our next home fixture has now been confirmed as Saturday 19 of April and will be played as a tournament including teams from the NDL and also teams from other divisions that have been knocked out of the cup.

In regards to the cup, entries are now open and Morgan will be entering a team. The details of any cup fixtures will be posted as soon as the information becomes available.

A big thank you to everyone who has supported the team through its infancy and we look forward to your continued encouragement in the new year.

Merry Christmas!
