Scottish Rugby is delighted to announce the teams that will be taking part in the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s on 31 May and 1 June 2008.

In addition to the 12 core teams that take part in the IRB Sevens World Series, four invitational teams will also be taking part. This year they are Spain, Russia, Portugal and Moldova.

Moldova have never taken part in the event nor indeed have ever played rugby in Scotland before so Scottish Rugby is especially looking forward to their visit.

Scotland 7s head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: "I've never come up against Moldova before but their inclusion highlights the global appeal of rugby sevens.

It's not just the top nations that take part; it gives teams from all over the world the opportunity to experience and compete in an exhilarating brand of international rugby."

On returning to Edinburgh for the final leg of the Series, Gemmell added: _x001C_Last year's Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s was fantastic experience, and having played all over the world, the squad thoroughly enjoyed competing on home soil.

The support from the stands was exceptional and really helped give us home advantage. Our results have been good this year and we're now looking to push on and finish on a high at Murrayfield._x001D_

Scottish Rugby chief executive, Gordon McKie, said: _x001C_It will be fantastic to welcome back the teams that competed last year, plus the four invitational sides.

The sevens are very much about welcoming new teams to add to the competition and I am sure that these teams will bring with them their own unique brand of rugby and flair, both on and off the pitch._x001D_

Paul Bush, chief operating officer for EventScotland, the national events agency, said: _x001C_Last year we witnessed some fantastic sevens rugby, a great party atmosphere and a fantastic finale to the Sevens series with New Zealand collecting the inaugural Edinburgh 7s title as well as the IRB Series title.

_x001C_The announcement of the sixteen teams taking part in this year's event shows it's going to be just as exciting with the likes of New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa lining up against Moldova, Russia and Portugal.

Scotland is becoming home to some great events and hosting the calibre of events, such as the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s, only continues to help raise our international profile and reputation._x001D_
