Crombie On Climbing The Ladder

ImageSean Crombie admits making the breakthrough with Edinburgh in Friday's Magners League match against Cardiff at Murrayfield (28 March, kick off 7.30pm) would cap off a perfect season for the young hooker.

The 21-year-old National Senior Academy forward recorded 20 appearances for Boroughmuir as the Meggetland-based club lifted the Premier One title and was capped for the Scotland club international against Wales in February before being called up by the Barbarians.

Now, after being named in a provisional 27-man squad for the visit of the Blues, former Borders player Crombie has now set his sights on making his mark in the black and red of Edinburgh.

Crombie said: "It is a massive achievement to eventually get considered for first team rugby at Edinburgh and that has happened because of merit rather than injury. Obviously I"ve not been picked yet, but at least I"m climbing up the ladder.

"Apart from not playing for Edinburgh, it has been the best season I"ve ever had. Boroughmuir has been a major part of that.

"A lot of the guys at Boroughmuir have either been professional or been very close to it. So it is a good standard and the only disappointment so far has been to not have had any game-time for Edinburgh."

Jockeying for position with the likes of Ross Ford, Andrew Kelly and Steve Lawrie has made first team opportunities a rarity for Crombie, but the Kirkcaldy-born number two is optimistic about making an impact.

He said: "I came in and started on the bottom rung of the ladder. I suppose I am fourth choice hooker and it is a case of just keeping my head down and trying to work towards catching up with Fordy (Ross Ford)."

Edinburgh's 22-man squad to face Cardiff at Murrayfield will be announced on Thursday with a handful of players still yet to prove their fitness to head coach Andy Robinson.

Meanwhile, Cardiff have named Grand Slam winners Tom Shanklin and Martyn Williams have been selected to start for the match, so it promises to be a night of top-class rugby at The Castle. Tickets: _15 (Adults), _5 (Concessions, oaps, students and under-18s). Book your place now on 0131 346 5180
