End Of 2007/2008 Season Awards

ImageForget the Oscars or the BAFTAS, because when it comes to awards ceremonies tonight's Edinburgh Rugby Club End of Season Dinner_wins the top gong,_but the question is which player will be crowned Magners Edinburgh Player of the Year?

Voted by the followers of the Black and Red Army via e-mail, the 36-man squad has been whittled down to just three remaining candidates; Mike Blair, Nick De Luca and Ross Rennie.

The winner at the event (staged at the Thistle Suite, Murrayfield) will be handed the coveted Magners Edinburgh Player of the Year trophy (pictured right) and there will be numerous other winners on show in the various categories.

With 35 former Edinburgh players in attendance, it promises to be a special night and there will be a must-see gallery online here at www.edinburghrugby.org, so if you cannot attend you can get an exclusive insight into the awards dinner of the team everyone is talking about.


The candidates for the Try of the Year are:
John Houston (versus Toulouse, home, Heineken Cup, November)
Ross Ford (versus Leicester, home, Heineken Cup, January)
Ben Gissing (versus Toulouse, away, Heineken Cup, January)

The candidates for Young Player of the Year are:
Ross Rennie, 22, won first Scotland cap against Ireland during 6 Nations, 18 starts for Edinburgh
Ben Cairns, 22, scored try for Scotland A, captained Edinburgh against Dragons, 22 starts for the team
Greig Laidlaw, 22, won Melrose Sevens with Scottish Thistles, one start for the team

The candidates for Newcomer of the Year are:
John Houston, 25, debut season as a professional, 16 starts, two Heineken Cup tries
Ross Ford, 24, first season at club, 14 starts, try against Leicester in Heineken Cup
Ben Gissing, 32, first season at club, 21 starts, try against Toulouse in Heineken Cup

The candidates for Community Player of the Year are:
Craig Smith
Ben Meyer
Andrew Easson
