Gala-born referee Andrew McMenemy has been appointed by the IRB to the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens. Andrew, alongside fellow Scottish official Neil Paterson, will referee as representatives from the host nation.
However, his duties do not stop there, a week later he will travel to Wales for the IRB Junior World Championships where he will act as touch judge in the tournament.
At the tender age of 23, Andrew is thrilled to be involved in the sevens. He has honed his skills through Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One, age grade matches and women's internationals but he has never before refereed in a senior men's international competition.
Andrew said: "It is a massive honour to be involved at this level of the game. Many of the other referees in the competition are involved in Magners League fixtures and have already toured on the sevens circuit for many seasons.
It will certainly be a standard above what I have done before and it is a massive opportunity for me to further my career."
The sevens will certainly represent the pinnacle of Andrew's refereeing experience so far. However, he is modest and realises the importance of staying grounded.
Of course I would love to become a mainstay on the circuit and travel to the likes of Adelaide, Hong Kong and Dubai but you have to focus on the match in hand.
As long as I continue to enjoy what I am doing I will happily referee at all levels of the game_x001D_, adds Andrew.
