Deeside S1’s were in action against Aberdeen Grammar last Sunday 18th. The team was slightly under strength with a few key players unavailable but was able to borrow some players from Grammar.
Depsite the score line of 9 tries conceded to three 3 tries scored the Deeside players were tenacious throughout, and the score somewhat flatters the Grammar side. The main between the sides appeared to be dominance of the bigger Grammar forwards at the rucks and mauls. Indeed, Deeside were lacking a natural No.8 and centre Rafe Welsh agreed to play out of position as No.8. Despite this Rafe was very active around field and tackled well above his weight. Elliott Wood, was also prominent in tackling and linking with no sign that he had only started playing rugby the day before! Additionally, Alexander Taylor made a lot of yards (‘metres’ for the younger readers) for the team and tacked strongly, with good support from Andrew Mullins and Alex Fyfe. Jamie Hillier also deserves mention as he provided a quick link to the backs and made several probing runs against far bigger opponents. At fly half Struan Gordon ran and distributed well and John Crilly and Liam Hutcheon looked to attack from centre, while Cameron Wood looked to break wide on the wing.
All players should be commended for not letting their heads drop against much bigger opponents. Deeside started the stronger, but failed to score from this start. They finished competitively and got the final score. In between, they were mostly undone by larger, stronger and faster opponents breaking the initial tackle and getting away. Deesides’s tries were scorred by Rafe Welsh, Andrew Mullins and John Crilly.
