30 players from Glasgow and 23 players from the Exiles gathered at Whitecraigs on Sunday to take part in a development game to allow District and National selectors to assess the progress of the players on show. In the Event a titanic struggle ensued to see the game go ahead. A very cold wintry blast with driving snow descended on Newton Mearns within half an hour of the kick off, however after consultation with the Referee it was decided to persevere with sessions of 20mins a piece. After 20 mins all players went back into the clubhouse to thaw out and the next group of players played a further 20 mins. A final 25 minute session took place once the weather had cleared and therefore allowed all players to have sufficient game time.
Throughout the sessions there was plenty of endeavor on show as players did their best. Both the medical staff and the coaching staff on both sides were kept busy with either fixing players or directing players to allow everyone a chance to promote themselves. Tries were in short supply with each side scoring one try each, however credit should go to all players who never stopped trying despite the cold.
Many thanks are due to Whitecraigs RFC, who were brilliant in dealing with the boys needs, to the Referee and Touch judges, and all the hardy spectators who came along to watch.
As with every thing in life where there is a Negative, there is a positive and the smile on the catering managers face was a sight to behold when he realized he had dished out over three Hundred coffees and teas as everyone fought the weather!!! Well done to the winner!
