Carrick 1st XV played their first game of 2009 on Saturday against a young Wellington 1st XV side. Carrick started well with the blues forwards again dominating up front. After 5 minutes the boys from Maybole scored their first try when from a set scrummage move Ross McCulloch scored in the corner. The conversion was missed by Logan. The game continued with Carrick camped in the Wellington half and from this pressure a further two tries were scored by Robert Sykes and Iain Coleman.
Half Time 15 -0
The second half kicked off with Carrick scoring directly from the restart. Iain Coleman caught the ball and then went on a storming 40 yard run, he passed to Craig Davidson who drew the last man which allowed Ross McCulloch to score in the corner. With the soft under foot conditions making goal kicking difficult Logan again missed the conversion from the touchline. Carricks last score came from forward pressure and after a series of drives Iain Coleman scored again. This time Logan kicked the conversion to put Carrick 27-0 up. However rather than give up this score seemed to galvanise the Wellington side who then dominated the last 15 minutes and had the final say with a well deserved try from their outside centre. The conversion was successful.
Final Score 27 -7.
This game allowed Carrick to try out a new half back combination with Joe Cree playing at scrum half but also saw Connor Brown make his first XV debut. Both gave good performances and this again shows the depth of squad that the school now has. With 5 players missing it was excellent to still have 20 players available for the game. However with the Scottish Bowl Quarter Final match against the Nicolson Institute now confirmed for Tuesday 10th February the team will have to perform better than they did today if they wish to go further in the competition.
Mr Brown felt that the performance was satisfactory with certain elements such as the lineout and counter rucking not being anywhere near as sharp as it was before the Xmas break.
The 1st XV's next game is against Touring side Maesteg on Friday 6th February under the lights at Millbrae. The Kick off will be 6.00pm.
Also on Saturday the Carrick S3/4 side contributed greatly to an excellent match against Wellington. The final score was 15 all. The Carrick scorers were William McJanet, Blair Jardine and Jordon Brown. Once again it was great to see a full squad of 22 being fielded on a Saturday morning. The S3 sides next game is against Rosshall on Tuesday 3rd February at Cartha RFC.
