Alloa 2Nd Xv Conquer Tricky Weather Conditions

Alloa 2nd xv 19 Kirkcaldy 3rd xv 0

Alloa Twos celebrated their second outing of the season with a deserved victory over Kirkcaldy at Earlsfield.

The match as a whole was largely spoiled by a gusting wind that made effective line-out throwing virtually impossible however Alloa did put together some decent phases in the second half after both sides had drawn a blank in the first forty minutes. Davie Dempster (on loan from Hillfoots) fairly sprinted through for the opening try and then Alloa notched a second score by Michael Stone which will be sure to feature in trivia questions for many a year. After all when was the last time a former Glasgow Rangers player scored a try for Alloa 2nd XV? Phil Edwards slotted the trickiest of conversions and then stepped his way under the posts for a try he converted himself to secure victory for the home side. Praise should go to all fifteen of the Alloa lads who pulled on a jersey for the club however special mention should go to flanker Mark Simcock who was unluckily denied to tries by the match official. It should be said that the match official was Alloa R.F.C.’s Norrie Bridgeman who handled the contest fairly, firmly and also had a good feel for the fact that the day was about thirty guys just wanting to play an enjoyable game of rugby.

“Saturday was another milestone on the road to recovery for Alloa R.F.C. with again two senior teams fielded and also two wins registered. There were over thirty members and sponsors who enjoyed pre-match lunch and hospitality in the club function room and they were able to watch the match on the newly concreted frontage to the club instead of previously puddle jumping!! I would like to thank Davie Anderson and Derek Brydie, partners in local firm Hamilton & Brydie, for taking forward the front of the club project to an outstanding conclusion. Also thanks to our sponsors and members for contributing to Saturday’s raffle where money raised was given to the Clackmannanshire Colts Under 18 tour fund. I’m now looking forward to Saturday’s Clacks Colts league decider at home to Angus Colts which is being sponsored by the friends of Alloa Rugby Club and their wives and then our 1st xv home match against Atholl Highlanders on the 28th of March which has attracted dual sponsorship from local firms.”
