THE FIFE LODGE BANFF 7S WERE A RESOUNDING SUCCESS AT DUFF HOUSE GROUNDS ON SATURDAY. THIS WAS ESPECIALLY THE CASE FOR ABERDEEN GRAMMAR WHO WON 3 OF THE FOUR TROPHIES BEING PLAYED FOR. IN THE U18 TOURNAMENT THEY WERE PRESENTED WITH THE COLIN SMITH MEMORIAL TROPHY WHICH WAS PRESENTED TO THE WINNERS BY COLIN'S YOUNG SISTER LUCY. BANFF HAD TWO TEAMS IN THE DRAW AND FOUND THE GOING HARD AGAINST SIDES WHICH WERE QUICK AND WELL ORGANISED FOR THE SHORTENED GAME. THE FINAL WAS BETWEEN ABERDEEN GRAMMAR AND MACKIE ACADEMY FROM STONEHAVEN. THE LADS FROM STONEY GAVE THE CITY SLICKERS A HARD FOUGHT GAME, HOWEVER THE POWER AND STRENGTH OF GRAMMAR WON THROUGH IN THE END. MORAY WERE WINNERS OF THE PLATE AND THEY ALSO SHOWED SOME GREAT SKILLS IN THEIR PLAY.


ABERDEEN GRAMMAR WERE ALSO VICTORIOUS IN THE SENIOR TOURNAMENT WHERE THEY OVERCAME A STRONG CHALLENGE FROM CUP HOLDERS CAITHNESS. THE GAME WAS TIED AT ALL AT FULL TIME AND A WELL TAKEN DROP GOAL BY SCRUM HALF ROB LAWSON SEALED THE GAME FOR GRAMMAR. ADELINE COX OF THE FIFE LODGE BANFF PRESENTED THE TROPHY TO WINNING CAPTAIN COLIN PHILIPS. BANFF HAD AN EXCELLENT AFTERNOON AND WERE UNLUCKY TO BE DEFEATED IN THE PLATE FINAL BY A STRONG GRAMMAR 2ND STRING, WHOSE SUPERIOR FITNESS WAS THE DECIDING FACTOR IN A KEENLY CONTESTED TIE. oN THE WAY TO THE PLATE FINAL BANFF HAD BEATEN LOCAL RIVALS HUNTLY, ABERFDEEN WANDERERS AND NEW CLUB, BUCKIE. CLUB CAPTAIN GRAEME GAULD PRAISED HIS TEAMS EFFORTS ESPECIALLY JAMES MILNE WHOSE SUPPORT PLAY GAINED HIM A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF TRIES AND DETERMINED DEFENCE SAVED A FEW TRIES BEING SCORED. aNOTHER PLAYER DESERVING SPECIAL PRAISE WAS EUAN SWAN WHO RACED ABOUT THE PARK TO GREAT EFFECT AN D WAS STILL FULL OF RUNNING AT THE FINAL WHISTLE, IN SPITE OF HAVING PLAYED IN ALL BANFF'S TIES IN THE U18 EVENT IN THE MORNING AND ALL OF THE SENIOR MATCHES. OTHER SQUAD MEMBERS WERE GORDON ROBERTSON, SHAUN CLARK, GARRY CONN, MARK FOOLBROOK,RODDY HALL, EUAN ANDERSON AND STUART ROSS.   OTHER BANFF PLAYERS ANDY KEWLEY AND JORDAN NICOL LED AT TEAM COMPRISING PLAYERS FROM GARIOCH, GRAMMAR WHO PERFORMED WELL CONSIDERING THEY HAD NEVER MET BEFORE.

THE WEATHER WAS GRAND UNTIL LATE AFTERNOON WHEN A CLOUD BURST COOLED THE PLAYERS AND HEALTHY CROWD WHO ENJOYED A FINE DISPLAY OF SKILL AND PACE. tHANKS TO JONH AND ADELINE COX OF THE FIFE LODGE HOTEL BANFF FOR THEIR VALUED SUPPORT.
