Deeside Make A Solid Start

A total of twenty nine S1 & S2 Deeside boys came played their opening game of the season against Ellon last Sunday at Tillybrake. Deeside rose to the challenge playing 3 sessions, 2 mixed S1/ S2 and one S1 only game. In the initial encounter, which was a draw at 2 tries and one conversion each, two well matched sides saw John Crilly and Cameron Wood score tries, supported by strong running from Elliot Wood, Struan Gordon, Alex Taylor, Joshua Williams and Joel Back. A mixed S1/S2 pack, with S1’s Kirk Geddes, Daniel Dunn, Daniel Graham and Jack Christie got well engaged alongside their S2 team-mates, providing good ball for the backs to attack.   Deeside were unlucky not to win this first game, and will need to work hard on their defensive skills before their next game, particularly how to implement a drift defence more effectively to reduce the space available to the opposition wingers.

The second game was an all S1 affair. Ellon provided strong rucking and ball retention in close encounters, tying-in a number of Deeside players to provide overlaps and fast open play to score 3 tries. Deeside's confidence grew later in the game and their scrummaging improved considerably.  There was good forward play from Brice Ledingham, Ryan Harker and Ross Benton, and a few strong breaks from Deeside narrowly missed turning try scoring opportunities into points.  Considering that this is the S1 side’s first game on a full size pitch and first time playing S1 law variations this was a great team performance with great promise for the season ahead.

A thrilling third game saw the mixed S1/S2  Deeside team take  a good victory of 4  tries to none, John Crilly,  Raef Welsh and  Struan Gordon were the scorers and growing confidence in attacking moves was evident from Andrew Mullins and Adam Thomson complemented by strong  defensive play from George Pearce and  Harry Lenton. Daniel Graham and Daniel Dunn also put in excellent performances playing for the first time as flankers in the 15 aside mixed game. This was a solid start to the season and the coaches were very pleased with everyone’s performance all round. The next fixture is with Garioch in Inverurie set for Sunday 6th September.
