There’s a feeling outside Mayfield suggesting that Dundee High may be regarded as underdogs in Premier One this year and the prospect of Melrose at Mayfield this Saturday certainly represents a formidable challenge.
While Dundee’s result against Currie is unlikely to be causing many sleepless nights in Melrose, Director of Rugby, Ian Rankin stressed that game had provided some timely P1 facts of life. “We had a number of players involved last week who had not experienced the intensity and pace of Premier 1 rugby. Now they know where they need to be for our match with Melrose, one of the biggest names in Scottish Club Rugby, this weekend.”
Melrose finished last season strongly and having brought in a raft of new faces this summer, dug out a morale-boosting win against Hawks last week.
There’s been a noticeable drift of players away from Borders clubs outwith the top flight this season and Melrose, with five of their thirteen summer recruits coming from Gala and Jed, have grabbed their fair share prompting Ranks to add, “Both we and Melrose have much changed squads from last season which adds unfamiliarity into the mix and we are looking forward to a massive challenge at Mayfield, where our record in all competitions speaks for itself.”
Dundee High v Melrose kicks off at 3.00pm at Mayfield and where better than the first home game of the season for this crop of players to prove the underdog tag sits no more comfortably with them than it did their predecessors?
