Looking forward to Saturday’s game against Selkirk, Dundee High Director of Rugby Ian Rankin stressed the importance of last week’s performance saying, “I was delighted with the response from the squad after gifting a result to Melrose the previous week which hurt all involved but had made us all the more determined to come back from Edinburgh with a victory.”
That response might also have been partly inspired by the competition for places that exists at Mayfield this season, a situation that gives the head coach a welcome problem. “One of the targets for this season was to have competition in all positions and with the 2nds having a good win on Saturday plus the return of some players after being unavailable earlier in the season certainly gives me a number of difficult selection decisions for this week’s game.”
Last weekend’s win certainly settled some Dundee nerves but Ranks hinted that Selkirk will be just as desperate to get a first win under their belts. “Selkirk put up a fantastic performance last season when they came up from Prem 2 and they will be very disappointed in their results so far this season so I am sure we can expect them to arrive in a very determined mood.”
Both Selkirk, with club Internationals Harkness and Lee Jones, and Dundee have flair out wide and, with the added spice of old scores to settle, this one has all the ingredients for a gripping contest.
