Bright Start For School 1St Xv

The school 1st XV have started off the new season in fine fashion. With over half of last seasons squad leaving school Mr Brown and Colin Sturgeon knew that this years group would have to work hard to reach the level of play that last seasons squad did. To this end the squad attended the summer rugby camp in high numbers and have continued this work ethic into their first few games of the season. With 5 of last seasons U15 Ayrshire Cup winning team now passed their rugby ready tests,  Craig Davidson, 1st XV captain being selected in the Scotland U18 training squad and several of last seasons side still at school this years side certainly has talent and ability.
This was demonstrated during the 5 pre season games that the team has played since August. Two victories over Irvine RFC U18's (30 - 12) and (46 - 0) were followed by a 7-7 draw with Kilmarnock's U18 side that contained 4 boys who are playing for their 1st XV men's side. Girvan Academy were next up and this proved an ideal opportunity to try some new combinations with Carrick scoring 15 tries in the process.
Last Saturday saw the sides first competitive game of the season against a young Hamilton College side. With 5 regulars out the coaches were slightly concerned how the team would cope however this proved to be unfounded with tries from Michael Kirk aka BULL, Stephen Logan, Blair Jardine, Ross McCulloch X2, Calum Smith, Sam Currie and Duncan Sturgeon, who also converted 5 of these tries to produce a final score of 50 - 0 to the 'blues'. 1st XV captain Craig Davidson stated afterwards:
"This was a impressive performance when you consider we had 5 regular starters out. We played some good rugby but know we still have lots to improve on. I am sure that will be emphasised at training this week."
The next 4 weeks will provide the team with some stern tests with Douglas Ewart in the Scottish Cup First up this Tuesday followed by games against Belmont, Wellington and Marr College.
