Rams Travel Well

Moffat travelled with only a 15 man squad. to meet McLaren at their new home ground in Dunblane, that was a vast improvement to their former venue at Callander.  The home team started this Scottish Hydro West 2 league game with passion and soon had the Rams manfully defending in their own twenty-two.

This game pattern continued for the first quarter of the game, with McLaren attacking the Ram’s try line and the Moffat team repulsing each of their efforts.  Then the Rams won a scrum against the head and scrum-half Calum Jardine released the backs who cut through the home defence with a slick handling move that resulted in a good try by Graeme Gemmell to give Moffat the lead.

The home team continued to dominate the territorial advantage and ten minutes before half-time were rewarded with an unconverted try to make them level with the visitors at 5 points each.  Approaching the interval the pressure of almost constant defence was putting a strain on the Rams pack, but they held on manfully until the break.

The second half started much as the first with McLaren piling on the pressure and Moffat defending skilfully and breaking out from time to time.  One of these moves, starting deep in the Rams half with forwards and backs combining well, ended in a fine try scored by Michael Lockhart and converted by Graeme Gemmell to put Moffat ahead again.

The McLaren team responded with renewed effort and spent some time camped on the Rams goal-line, they could not breach the robust defence put up by Moffat.  In the end the final score came just before full time when Dave Scott intercepted a pass in the twenty-two and sprinted the whole length of the field to touch down under the posts and give Graeme Gemmell an easy kick for the conversion.

This was a good result for Moffat as they withstood a lot of pressure from the home team but made chances and took them to secure victory.  On Saturday the Rams are at home against Uddingston and kick off at 3.00pm.
