Orkney Rfc Stay Top After Sixth Win In A Row

NINE tries scored without reply against visitors Mackie FP at a wet and windy Pickaquoy on Saturday afternoon kept Orkney out in front in Caledonia League Division 1.

Orkney captain John Dearness opened the home side's account in the third minute, and Bryan Linklater was over in the 11th.

However, this was not to be a day of flowing rugby, and though Orkney had most of the play, it was midway through the half before Erland Drever added a third try for Orkney.

A Sean Cursiter score just before half time, putting Orkney 24-0 at the turnaround, secured the bonus point.

Orkney were more confident looking in the second half, which saw tries from James Linklater, Danny Bain, and Andrew Baird, plus another one each from John Dearness and Bryan Linklater. The latter was a particularly well-created try involving twins Chris and Marcus Guthrie in the build-up.

In a contest that conditions dictated was more of a forward battle than running game, second row Adam Baird was Orkney's man of the match.

Orkney now sit top of the league on 29 points, with six wins from six. Strathmore, who pipped St Andrews University 12-10 in the second v third battle, are now second on 23. Glenrothes leapfrog the St Andrews students into third after beating Ross Sutherland 27-6.

Next Saturday sees Orkney travel away to Ross Sutherland, who lie fifth after their defeat.
