A combined Deeside S1/S2 team played Garioch last Sunday in match consisting of three 20 minute periods. Garioch were short of players whilst Deeside had a big turnout of S2’s and S1’s and so in good sporting spirit several of Deeside’s players volunteered to take turns to play for Garioch to keep the numbers even. The first period was won by Deeside three tries to two. Deesides tries came from Andrew Mullins who scored two of them, both by good driving play from the forwards close to the line. Scrum half Matthew Hillier scored the decisive try, with a blind slide break from a scrum, doing well to keep the ball in play and drive over.
The second period was won quite convincingly by Garioch, who moved the ball well through the hands, although better tackling from Deeside could have made a big difference. Defence is clearly an area that needs attention.
The third period ended in a draw, with three tries and three conversions each. Try scorers were Elliot Wood and John Crilly (2), and conversions were slotted over by Matthew Hillier and Jack Christie. Mixed S1/S2 games like this are always challenging with a large squad, but the Deeside players, particularly the S1’s, put in some very good performances and benefited from the experience of the S2 players. The next games on the calendar will be played with S1 and S2 teams, check the web site for details http://www.deeside-rfc.co.uk/junior/s1ands2.html. This coming Sunday 29th November, Deeside U15’s take on Jordanhill/Hillhead from Glasgow in the quarter finals of the National U15 Cup. KO is at 1.30 on Aboyne Green, all support welcome.
