Deeside U16 ran out convincing 64-5 winners against a stuffy Mackie side, although Deeside didn’t start well, and Mackie played the more determined rugby in the first fifteen minutes of the half. Indeed Deeside were clearly unsettled early on by the strength of the larger Mackie pack, and the Mackie scrum proved difficult to control throughout. Deeside however played a much better offloading game and quick movement of the ball away from contact through the forwards soon resulted in three tries in succession from Hart, Diack and Christie, breaking the deadlock. Mackie replied quickly with a tap and go try from their forwards when Deeside were penalised for holding on at the tackle, and form then on Deeside woke up to the fact that this was going to be a tough game up front. A quick duo of tries by Earle-Wright at standoff, however, pushed Deeside into a strong half time lead of 31-5. The best of these was started by Rennie at full back attacking from from deep inside his own 22 after fielding a long kick ahead. Rennie attacked along the right wing and when the space was finally closed down by the defence he chipped back in field for Earle-Wright to chase, the bounce was kind, and Earle-Wright finished under the posts. The second half started much like the first with a short period in which neither side settled. Realising that they needed to keep the ball away from the Mackie pack Deeside began to play a more expansive game and the back-row linked well with offloads and pop passes to keep the ball alive rather than set up rucks. Five more tries followed in the second half for Deeside, scored by Earle-Wright, Gomez, Ballantyne, Rennie and Morris. This was a good team performance by Deeside against the strongest opposition they have faced so far in the league and a convincing win. The back row forwards Gomez, Ballantyne, Irvine, Christie and Sutton, were instrumental in playing the open game needed against a larger pack in attack and the hard tackling required in defence. The backline need to work hard on cleaner swifter delivery, with too many passes still not going to hand. Nonetheless, it was a good team win all round and something to build on as the league progresses next week.
