Tag-Orkney - It'S A Hit!

Schools from Orkney and the Isles came together at the Pickaquoy centre, at the end of September, for Orkney RFC Schools’ TAG Festival, the second festival to take place in the last twelve months.

On a fresh day with the occasional shower, four hundred and sixty five children from primary five to primary seven participated in TAG rugby, playing games in their respective groups and putting the training they have received from club development officer, Bruce Ruthven, to good use.  More than forty volunteers were also present to assist the smooth running of the day by refereeing, pitch managing and looking after the fifty teams.  Twenty helpers from Kirkwall Grammar School and twenty officials from Orkney RFC all contributed towards the successful day.

The festival kicked off at 11am with each team playing in four matches throughout the morning and afternoon with final games finishing at 1.40pm. Teams showed fantastic enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the festival and were very commendable how all teams contributed towards the positive spirit of the day.

The skills on show were at a very high level with quality ball handling skills evident despite the occasional bad weather conditions and the team’s evasive running was equally impressive.

Orkney RFC Development Officer Bruce Ruthven said: “It was a fantastic day with so many children enjoying their rugby and expressing their rugby skills.  The continued commitment and support from the schools has been top notch as a lot of teams had a very early start to the day, with catching ferries, and one school having to catch a flight to get here. Another school that could not catch an early boat stayed in a youth hostel in Kirkwall the night before.

“Well done to all involved; it was another huge success with over five hundred and fifty people involved altogether. Thanks to Scottish Rugby and CashBack for Communities for their continued support which contributed greatly towards schools’ travel expenditure.”

The next festival will be held on Friday 29 April 2011
