Renfrew kickstarted their season with a win over high-flying Mid Argyll but made hard work of it.
Mid Argyll had territorial advantage in the opening quarter keeping ‘frew pegged back with wind-supported touch kicking. But ‘frew eventually starting making yards the hard way with some strong individual runs. It was powerful runs from flanker Richie Brown and centre Alex Turton that gave ‘frew their two first half tries with James Calvert adding a conversion and a penalty to make it 15-0 at half-time.
Frew looked forward to an easier 2nd half but let Mid Argyll creep back into it by conceding penalty after penalty. MAs kicker slotted two between the posts but had he been any more accurate they would have had at least a bonus point to take back to Lochgilphead.
That said, this was ‘frews first win of the season, and their first victory over Mid Argyll and first game without conceding a try in three years, so credit due for that
