Mary Christian, better known affectionately in North East rugby circles as “Scary Mary”, passed away on Sunday 24 October 2010.
Mary was involved in rugby in the Aberdeen area for nearly 20 years, spending a good deal of that time coaching the minis at Ellon RFC for eight years before moving to Aberdeen Grammar Rugby for a further eight years.
During her time coaching, Mary inspired and encouraged hundreds of players to develop their rugby, going from mini rugby to leading out their club’s 1st XV and, for some, on to district rugby and beyond.
Mary was the first woman in the north-east to achieve a Level 2 coaching certificate and was the first, and to date, only woman to receive Aberdeen Grammar’s Clubman of the Year award – an award that had been running for nearly 100 years - following a very successful season with her Grammar P4 “Wild Cats” team.
Family and friends said goodbye to “Scary Mary” at a funeral service on Monday 25 October at Kaimhill Chapel in Garthdee. Mary brought enthusiasm and the joy of rugby to many people encouraging them to take part as players, coaches and club volunteers.
Her presence will be greatly missed.
