The Gytes was the venue for this Border Under 16’s League and Border Under 16’s National Qualifier double header. Peebles started positively in their first outing in their new strips sponsored by The Courthouse, and after five minutes were rewarded with a try. A good driving maul into the Hawick half was followed by some pick and drives from the forwards, which culminated in a scrum ten metres out. From the scrum, number eight Millen picked up and drove over in the corner for an unconverted try.
The visitors responded ten minutes later with a well worked try. After good forward play rolling the ball into the left hand corner, they moved the ball through their three quarters and scored in the right corner. Again, the conversion was missed. The remainder of the half saw Hawick exert considerable pressure on the Peebles line but terrific tackling by the backs, notably Pye, Girdwood and Jardine saw the scoreline remain at 5 – 5 at half time.
The second half started in similar fashion, with the visitors dictating play and playing much of the match in the Peebles half. After five minutes of the re-start however, Peebles almost went into the lead again. From a defensive scrum on their own 22, Millen again picked up and ran through the entire Hawick team, being stopped only just short of the tryline. Unfortunately, support was not there and Millen was penalised for not releasing, allowing Hawick to clear their lines.
Shortly after this, Hawick went ahead with a well worked training ground move culminating in a converted try. By this time, the match was starting to heat up with Hawick not getting it all their own way (which they have become used to in the Borders). Similarly, Peebles were becoming frustrated with their lack of success in the ruck situation. With tempers starting to boil over, referee Maciver did well to keep a lid on things. Hawick were then awarded a penalty in the middle of the field, which they successfully kicked. As Hawick continued to pile the pressure on, they eventually broke through for a third try which was successfully converted.
This result ensures that Hawick finish the National Qualifiers as top of Pool B, and will now play the Pool A runners up for a place in the last eight of the Scottish Under 16’s Cup. Despite the loss, Peebles finish second in Pool B and now await the winners of Pool A for the other Borders place in the quarter finals.
