Patchy Glasgow do enough to overcome Borders
Glasgow U18s played their 2nd U18 National Selection Fixture on Sunday 6th March at Dumfries against the Borders. The squad struggled to find a structure to play against a dogged Borders outfit and the whole match was interrupted by penalties and errors resulting in a stop start affair. It was the Borders that started slightly stronger and strong running by Borders best 2 players – No.8 Stewart Graham and Loose head Prop Shawn Muir drove the Glasgow side deep within their own half. After 20 minutes of pressure the Borders only put 3 points on the board (penalty from Josh Welsh). Eventually Glasgow produced some go forward ball and phase play and Scott Houston darted from a ruck 5 metres out and stretched out for the first score (Chris Auld converted). Glasgow again drove into the Borders midfield and some good carries and recycling of the ball produced some gaps in the Borders defence and Chris Auld went through. Within 5 minutes with Glasgow finally playing a nice pattern Glasgow scored their 3rd try through Callum Templeton.
Half time: Glasgow 17 – 3 Borders
With excellent conditions the 2nd half promised to continue to produce some good running rugby, but after 5 minutes of pressure from Glasgow both penalties and errors let the Borders escape from their half. The match turned on its head and the Borders dominated the last 25 minutes of the match. Both Glasgow’s scrambling defence and the Border’s desire to kick the 3 points left the game in stalemate at 17 – 6. Eventually the Borders got width in their game and easily outstretched a tiring Glasgow team and Ritchie Todd scored an unconverted try in the corner. The last 3 minutes of the match fizzled out with errors from both sides.
Full time: Glasgow 17 – 11 Borders
Glasgow travel to Stirling on Sunday to play Caledonia in the final U18 National Selection Fixture (1pm KO) and will hope to minimize their penalty and error count.
