Tommy Allan, whose uncle John played for both Scotland and South Africa as a hooker in the 1990s, has been named today in the Scotland under-18 squad for their meeting against Japan High Schools at Braidholm, Glasgow on Sunday (kick-off 2pm).
Allan (pictured), who plays stand-off or centre within the London Wasps youth set-up, qualifies for Scotland through his Glasgow born father, Will, who played provincial rugby in South Africa and professional rugby in Italy.
The rugby pedigree also extends to his mother who played rugby for Italy.
Allan, educated at RGS High Wycombe, is listed in a 25-strong squad, which also includes three players who are still eligible for the Scotland under-17 squad – namely Jonny Gray, younger brother of Scotland second-row forward, Richie; scrum-half Alex Glashan; and wing Jamie Farndale.
One further back will be added to the squad after tomorrow night’s under-17 regional matches between Caledonia and Glasgow and Edinburgh and Borders.
Scotland under-18 head coach Grant McKelvey said: “The squad has been chosen on performances throughout the season, where we have seen some consistent displays from our front-row players and some excellence from our back-row, where we have gone for as physical a combination as possible.”
The squad also features Ayr centre Robbie Fergusson who has sampled Premier 1 and British and Irish Cup rugby in the last few months.
Admission to Sunday’s game is free and Japan High Schools will play a warm-up match against a Glasgow Hawks under-19 team at Old Anniesland, Glasgow on Thursday (kick-off 7.30pm).
