Scotland under-18 13 Japan High Schools 20
The Japanese High Schools team accounted for the young Scots at Braidholm, Glasgow this afternoon, through a four tries to two margin.
The tourists had the better of the early exchanges, their powerful packing surging over for two drive-over tries through Kengo Kitagawa (2 minutes) and Hiroki Yamamoto (16). However, as the half drew to a close stand-off Tommy Allan put Scotland under-18 on the scoreboard courtesy of a penalty and a try where he latched on to a kick ahead. The conversion, from out wide, went astray.
In the second period Edinburgh Academy wing Jamie Farndale collected a pinpoint cross-kick from substitute stand-off Sam Hidalgo Clyne (Merchiston Castle School) to give the hosts the lead for the first time at 13-10.
Japan however responded with tries from wing Hajime Yamashita and flankere Hayato Nishiuchi to give the home coaches much to ponder ahead of their trip to face England under-18 next weekend.
