FIRA/AER Tier 1 Under-18 competition:
Scotland 87 Germany 3
Scotland made it 22 tries in two games in France as they comprehensively dismantled their German counterparts in Lourdes tonight.
The young Scots ran in 12 tries to follow up their haul against Romania last weekend and will now play Italy in La Louberre near Tarbes on Saturday to determine the winners of the tier.
Head coach Grant McKelvey said: “We set our stall out with the players that we wanted a big score and that we also wanted to maintain our shape and our discipline – that’s what the players delivered.
“We posted a big score and there were some excellent individual performances. Some people were playing for their positions in the final match on Saturday so we’ll have some decisions to make now.”
McKelvey once again praised the contribution of Dumfries second-row Callum Templeton. “He has played every minute of every game for us. He is the glue that holds our front five together and he did particularly well for us,” he added.
Scotland, who led 45-0 at half-time, scored tries through Rory Hughes, Robbie Fergusson, Adam Sinclair, Alex Glashan, Sam Hidalgo Clyne, Johnny Matthews, Tommy Allan (2), Matthew Lamb (2), Templeton and Jamie Farndale. Allan converted all 12 scores and, for good measure, got the scoring underway with an early penalty. Allan’s points haul from the game was 37.
Saturday’s match against Italy – who qualified for the final with a win over Georgia tonight – will kick-off at 1pm BST.
