Second Half Push Sees Off Reivers

Edinburgh U16             49
Border Reivers U16      17

Edinburgh eventually ran out comfortable winners in their final National Player Identification fixture against Border Reivers at a sunny Braidholm, Glasgow, running in five converted tries in the second half after being held 12-12 at the break.

Despite the great conditions the match was a stop start affair for long periods with continual infringements from both sides ensuring the referees whistle needed at rest at the interval. Once Edinburgh managed to move the ball to space though, the Reivers defence had no answer.

It looked bright in the first half for Edinburgh as they took a 12-0 lead midway through the half, with a close range try from Karl Main and a break from deep sending Sean Mackle away on a long run in, with Alex Swan converting Mackle’s try. The Reivers began to exert some pressure late in the half and two close range tries from Angus Runciman and Callum Crookshanks, plus a Jack Learmonth conversion, tied the scores.

Edinburgh took command in the second half with three tries in five minutes, the first from Tom Salisbury who picked up a loose ball and raced through a static Reivers defence which had stopped expecting to hear the referee’s whistle. Edinburgh then took advantage of some poor restarts from the Reivers with two tries from midfield scrums. First space was creasted on the outside for Swan to cross, then after another blind-side break, the ball was fed back inside to the supporting Scott Burnside who strolled over. All three tries were converted by Swan.

With Edinburgh’s tails up they pressed for further tries with the lively Russell Grant crossing before Swan added his second try against a tiring Reivers defence. Again Swan showed his accuracy with the boot adding both conversions for a personal tally of 22 points. The Reivers did get a score back on the full time whistle when Connor Spence burrowed over after a series of rucks on the Edinburgh line.
