The Wasps feeder schools have recently been enjoying some inter-house rugby. For the first time in over a decade Morgan Academy held Inter-House rugby fixtures fielding 8 teams! Not to be outdone Braeview Academy also fielded 4 teams and played Inter-House rugby fixtures resulting in enough boys wanting to play after school that they have formed a school rugby team for the first time in the schools existence!
The teams took part in a 6week curricular rugby programme during PE which was delivered by Barry Crookston Morgan Rugby Football Club Development Officer and PE staff. In total 17 classes across both schools received rugby during PE, exposing approximately 500 pupils to the plethora of facets rugby has to offer. Crookston was thrilled at the success of the fixtures:
"It was fantastic to watch the players getting so enthused about the sport. Just a matter of weeks ago the lads started playing, the majority had never touched a rugby ball never mind played a fixture! Now they are putting in mammoth, technically correct tackles and playing an impressive offloading game. There were lads of all shapes and sizes getting involved and all bringing their own flavour to the game. It was amazing to watch the different playing styles each of the teams adopted to suit their player base, the players really embraced the opportunity and made it their own! It's great to see young people who may have otherwise never experienced rugby, thriving in the rugby environment which Morgan RFC, the Scottish Rugby Union and Dundee City Councils Sports Development Section is striving to create for these young people!
On the behalf of Morgan RFC and her partners I'd like to take this opportunity to thank both Head Teachers Mr Shaw and Mrs Hadcroft [Morgan Ac and Braeview Ac respectively], the Heads of PE Mr Kiddie and Mrs Watson [Morgan Ac and Braeview Ac respectively] and the PE staff at both schools for supporting curricular rugby in their schools whole heartedly and also attending rugby CPD's."
Rugby has not only been on the menu during curricular time, there are also dedicated teachers in both schools giving up their own time to for the development of their pupils in the shape of extra curricular rugby. Extra curricular rugby is now available to both schools and is supported by Morgan RFC. Mr Ross Clark (IT and Guidance) has traditionally run the extracurricular rugby available at Morgan Academy offers on a Thursday at Morgan Rugby Football Club. However this year he has been enjoying the support from Mr Ross Nesbit (English) and Mr Graham Kiddie (Head of PE). Good thing too as there are now three school teams to look after; the Boys S1/2, Boys Senior Team and Girls U18's!
Braeview Academy hopes to continue the development of their S1/2 Team which has been supported by Mrs Lee Watson (Head of PE) and Jamie Coll (PE). A fixture was unfortunately cancelled between the two schools due to a frozen pitch. However both of the schools S1/2 squads are looking forward to playing each other at the next available time!
The schools are taking positive steps to proving a pathway to a sport which lends its hand so well to many areas of the curriculum for excellence. The players at both schools are looking forward to playing in a club jersey in the shape of the Morgan Wasps RFC. For more information please contact Barry Crookston on [email protected].
