Gytes Gossip

Saturday saw the Peebles Squad travel to Selkirk for the penultimate round of the BSPC sponsored Kings of the Sevens at Philiphaugh. Facing Kelso in the first round Peebles won through and reached the semi-final beating Jed in the quarters – ultimately losing out to the hosts by 21 – 14. Selkirk went on to beat Melrose in the final coming from behind to win 20 – 19.

Tomorrow the Kings of the Sevens series, sponsored by Borders Solicitors Property Centre, reaches its climax at Riverside Park for the Jedforest tournament. This is always a lively day as players and supporters enjoy what is usually a sunny and friendly end to the season. Peebles have drawn Hamilton in the first round. For those fans considering going down to Jed there is a bus running – see club noticeboard.

Tomorrow also sees the traditional end of the season for the seconds seven with the Walkerburn sevens down at Caberston Haugh – always a day for fun and relaxation at the end of a long season. Peebles are drawn with Selkirk in the first round.

This coming Sunday there will be a clean-up of the club equipment at the Gytes at 11:00am, moving on to Hay Lodge for more of the same, culminating in a barbeque and beers at Hay Lodge to say goodbye to Dave Mclean and Ash. This is an open invite to all players, members and committee.

Next Friday the players take off on their Irish tour which has been brought to fruition by some really hard work by the organising committee and by the efforts of players in their fundraising events – we all hope that they enjoy the fruits of their labours.

Congratulations go to London Scottish who, having been dropped to the lowest tier of English club rugby after the professional club went bust, have worked their way back and last Saturday were promoted into the Championship – the second highest tier of English club rugby, with a last gasp win against main rivals Barking, – a great reward for a shedload of hard work put in over the intervening years and a remarkable achievement.

Members are asked to note that the club dinner will be held in the Eastgate clubrooms on Friday May 27th and not the 20th May as shown on the fixture card. Confirmed speakers are Jimmy Moffat – Tweeddale Rovers, Drew Moore – Peebles RFC, Archie Ferguson – SRU Council Member and Scott Tomlinson – Selkirk RFC. Contact Allan Beveridge for tickets.
