19 - 45
The annual Jack Henderson Match between Ross –Sutherland and Highland was played this weekend, in a match that would also see both teams’ coaches on the side line for the last time before stepping down. It was as always a hard fought match that saw the National 2 side Highland come out winners with a second half onslaught to put the sword to Ross 19 points to 45.
Ross-Sutherland enjoyed great support from the side line thanks to another successful hospitality day at the club. And the crown was kept entertained with a hard fought first half that saw both sides defence on the line being tested. But it was the visitors that struck first with a quick break off the back of a ruck on the Ross five meter line from Highlands’s big second row to put Highland 5 points up to nil.
Ross-Sutherland showed great spirit to get back in the game with veteran back rower James Cameron showing that he could still terrorise teams in the loose. But it was young flyer Mike Gordon who yet again came to the rescue of Ross. Picking up the ball from well inside his own half he went on a mazy run showing as he has done all season great pace and quick feet to go over for Ross-Sutherland first and equal the scores at 5 points a piece. Highland hit back quickly going over again to go 12 points up to 5 and this is how it would finish going into the interval.
The second half saw Highland find another gear and crossed the white wash of Ross’s line with only two minutes of the second half on the clock. Highlands’s set piece was going from strength to strength with a mobile back row this continual onslaught would continue with highland running another three unanswered tries that were all converted to go 31 points to 5 up.
Ross-Sutherland hit back with two tries through centre Calum Mackenzie and fly half Ali Kennedy who both showed great pace to rip through Highlands defensive line to go over. But hopes of a comeback were shorted lived as Highland went over for a final try of there own before the final whistle to kill off any chance of the Jack Henderson Bowl coming back to the Navel Grown, with the game finishing 19 points to 45 for the visitors.
With his last game at the sidelines for Ross-Sutherland Head coach John Scott said. “ The game was played in great spirit the best I have seen in that fixture, the boys played really well just missing a couple of big men and ran out of steam in the end. Glad my last game as head coach was positive and bodes well for next season. But more importantly we have a massive game at home next Saturday against Harris which will need a massive effort from all the boys in a game we must win”.
