Congratulations to Peebles player (and hopefully also next season) Alan Warnock for his Reserve Champion prize at the Royal Highland Show with his gimmer in the Scottish Mule sheep class.
Last Saturday saw delegates gather at Murrayfield for the SRU AGM and decide that this coming season Scotland’s club divisions will be regionalised below National League Division 1 into West, East and Caledonia with no change to the current format of the Premier Divisions.
The early rounds of the National Cup will also be regionalised with the winners competing in national knockout rounds – this brings the prospect of Border League matches on Saturdays with bigger crowds and much needed revenue.
For the 2012-2013 season regionalisation will progress further up the leagues, leading to ten team leagues with only two divisions at the top, where the clubs compete nationally, above two East and West championship divisions which will be redrawn each season to match the geography of the competing clubs. Clearly if the club is to maintain its status or hopefully progress up, then the focus this coming season will again be to initially get into the top four and compete for a place in what will be the premier league in the following season, failing that we will have to ensure a top four place in the section below to ensure a national place for 2012/13.
Tonight at 7:30pm in the Eastgate clubrooms the club will hold its AGM – all members are asked to make the effort to attend. Details are now available on the club noticeboard. There are still some posts to be filled for the coming season and as usual all volunteers will be made most welcome.
Year on year the ‘closed season’ appears to get shorter – pre-season training commences this year on Monday 11th July at 7:00pm sharp and will continue on a 3 nights a week basis towards the season’s start. We will be having a warm up game on Sat 6th August, possibly against Premier 1 Melrose (TBC). We will then train on Tuesday & Thursday W/C 8th August, with a midweek fixture against Lasswade, new boys in Premier 3, as there is no Saturday fixture, because it is the Peebles Show weekend. (13th August) We train on Tuesday and Thursday the following week with an away game against established Premier 3 opposition, Dumfries, on Sat 20th August, and the week after this we train Tuesday and Thursday as the build up to the first league fixture on Sat 27th August. We will have had 20 Rugby & Fitness Sessions under our belt by then, and we have to be ready for the kick off on the 27th August, as next season will be a massive challenge for the club as we attempt to move into the top tier of Scottish Rugby, and Premier 2 will be stronger and more competitive than it’s ever been.
Next week sees the start of the summer skills camp held throughout July by Peebles RFC DO George Blair. This will take place throughout the month on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Hay Lodge Park.
