For the match against the Barbarians, which is being played in aid of the Bill McLaren Foundation, Hawick’s Bruce McNeil has been appointed captain for the day with Selkirk’s Fraser Harkness his deputy.

McNeil commented: “It will be great for our players to have a match at this level.”

Harkness added: “Playing for the South has been one of the highlights of my playing career. It is really exciting to be called up for this game, when the proceeds will be going to the Bill McLaren Foundation. For me, that says it all really.”

South have also been fortunate enough to attract a kit supplier, Peebles based RugbyStore.co.uk. The company’s Director, said: “As a Borders company we jumped at the chance to support this game and the Bill McLaren Foundation. From every South shirt sold we will give the Foundation £5.”

The Barbarians have already selected Bill McLaren’s grandson, James Thompson, and expect to announce more high profile names next week.
