South Of Scotland Xv To Face Baabaas

Eight Melrose players will start for the South of Scotland in their historic fixture against the world-famous Barbarians at Mansfield Park, Hawick, next Tuesday (11 October, kick-off 4pm) in aid of the Bill McLaren Foundation.

The team will be captained by Hawick prop Bruce McNeil and is packed with the best club players from the Borders.  RBS Premier 1 teams from the area make up twelve of the starting side with Jedforest (RBS Premier 2) contributing three players in winger, Gregor Young, Back Row, Darren Gillespie and Prop, Robert Ferguson.

A key battle will be played up front with the Barbarians expected to field experienced internationals fresh from the World Cup, including 61 times capped Georgian prop, Goderzdi Shvelidze and Romanian lock, Valentin Poparlan.

Edinburgh Rugby backs Jim Thompson, John Houston and Sep Visser will be looking to inject some fast, expansive running rugby to the game as well as they are all up for selection to.

Of the 22 in the squad, Melrose have the most with 10, Gala contribute four, Jedforest and Hawick have three each and there are one each from Selkirk and Peebles.
