Lanark Rugby Club would be relieved to claim their narrow 15 – 18 victory over Bishoptn on Saturday. In a constant drizzle and with odd patches of the field under water it was never going to be a day for easy handling. Lanark struggled and were seldom in control up front, the result being in the balance until the final whistle.
The half time score was 3 – 3, an Iain Hughes penalty being matched by a Bishopton drop goal. On the restart a solo break by centre Steve McKeown from well out and the conversion gave Lanark a 7 point lead, but Bishopton quickly reversed this with two tries, one converted to put them 5 points ahead. Play was mainly confined to the Lanark end with Bishopton in control, but with 12 minutes remaining another solo effort with a long run in by stand- off Andrew Angus saw him cross near the posts. The scores were now level 15 – 15, but Lanark’s conversion kick was charged down! With only 3minutes left, wing Rhaurgh McLatchie was impeded when clear with the ball at his feet and 10 yards from the line. The referee awarded Lanark a penalty kick rather than a penalty try. Hughes added the winning points.
This Saturday Lanark will have to be at their best to claim the points when the current league leaders Strathclyde Police pay their first visit to the racecourse. KO is at 3pm.
