Glasgow Hawks 39pts Hillhead/Jordanhill 5pts
This was the very first competitive game between the two Clubs since the formation of Glasgow Hawks in 1997, but there was to be no fairy tale outcome for “Hills” who, despite playing with commendable spirit throughout, were ultimately outgunned by two goals and five tries to one try. Hawks now advance to the semi-final of the West Regional Cup.
Hawks had first use of the gale force wind and were ruthless in their finishing with their no. 8, Ross Miller, causing all sorts of problems for the “Hills” fringe defence with his ball carrying. Three of the Hawks five first half tries owed much to his breaking of the gain line with swift ball transfer creating room for Steven and Kris Hamilton to share four tries out in the wide channels with Miller himself touching down from close range. The” Hills” were by no means out of it with Haddon MacPherson’s constant sniping causing problems for the home defence, but too often the ball from the breakdown was too slow to stitch together much in the way of continuity play. Stuart Howie did counter with some mazy running from full back, but the half time score of twenty seven points to nil reflected the territorial possession the Hawks had enjoyed.
Any thoughts the “Hills” harboured about the Cup Tie’s becoming a game of two halves were rudely shattered by Hawks scoring through Tom Steven in the forty first minute. Thereafter, the game descended into some close quarter arm wrestling with some niggle to raise the temperature both on and off the field. “Hills” scrum remained strong and Jonny Agnew did well in the line outs, but despite having some chances in the final quarter close to the Hawks line, the visitors did not quite do enough to trouble the home defence apart from a close range try by the irrepressible Haddon MacPherson
“Hills” next game is now AWAY at Whitecraigs on the 28th January with a 14.00 hours kick-off.
