Heineken Cup Takes To The Road

Edinburgh Rugby players turned out at Beeslack High School today to kick-start a fantastic opportunity for clubs and communities to get their hands on one of sport's most venerable trophies – the Heineken Cup.

An all-time Scottish club rugby record is within the club’s sights more that five weeks out from their quarter-final clash with four-time champions Toulouse at Murrayfield on Easter weekend.

As a thank you to players and supporters, the cup and the club’s players are partnering Scottish Rugby’s regional development network to take to the road throughout the month of March so local communities can share in this great event and host one of the most famous pieces of silverware in world rugby.

Qualified PE teacher and Edinburgh Rugby hooker Steven Lawrie joined Sep Visser and Dougie Fife at the Penicuik school and welcomed the chance to showcase the famous cup.

He said: "The Heineken Cup trophy tour is our way of thanking clubs and schools for their record-breaking support which has been incredible throughout our journey to the last eight.

“Hopefully the trophy can inspire budding players, volunteers, referees and coaches and also encourage new participants in the sport at a very exciting time for Edinburgh Rugby and the game in Scotland as a whole.

“This is the biggest club rugby match to ever take place in Scotland so to be part of that as a player is massive but it’s important that everyone feels part of it.

“Their support can make the difference on match-day as we look to create the most intimidating atmosphere possible, really put the pressure on Toulouse and make the most of home advantage.”

Club and schools wishing to access the glittering prize are asked to contact Edinburgh and Midlothian regional development manager, Greg Cann, on greg.cann@sru.org.uk stating their club/school/association, contact details, the reason why you would like the cup to visit you and the date required (please give alternative dates where possible).

Priority will be given to those who require the cup as a showpiece for youth/school events and club dinners while the number of participants, media coverage/presence and logistics will also come into consideration.
