Edinburgh under 16 ran out eventual winner in the first of two National Selection Fixtures on Wednesday night in testing conditions at Murrayfield after a spirited Borders fight back. The game showed good intensity and endeavor in the opening exchanges before a series of attacks led to an angled run to the corner for centre Adam Hastings to open the scoring. Although very competitive across the park, further tries to exciting winger Ben Robbins and second row Hamish Robertson, along with one successful conversion from Hastings left the score at the interval at 17 – 0 to Edinburgh.
The Borders came out strongly in the second half, and with Craig Cowan and Stephen Ainslie regularly to the fore, showed they can also finish things off with tries from centre Rory Marshall and replacement second row Charlie Woodhouse setting up an exciting last 20 minutes. The rain and sleet was now coming down and credit must go to the players for trying to keep to the structure and move the ball into the wide channels in the difficult conditions. Robbins crossed again from a set play from his own half demonstrating excellent footwork and speed to which Craig Pringle from Borders side quickly replied rumbling over from close range. Robbins rounded off the scoring with his hat trick in similar fashion to his second, to bring the final score to Edinburgh 27 – 19.
Team manager Duncan Anderson was delighted with the performance of both teams ‘I must commend the players on their attitude and effort this evening to contribute to what was a competitive match of rugby football. I was very impressed with the way that both teams stuck to task in the sleet, rain and wind and in particular the ability to get the ball into the wide areas of the field to the wingers. In some ways it was a game of two halves, but I think the best team won at the end of the day, the players should just look to take it one game at a time, as they head towards the next selection fixture and onto the national trial. It is about converting chances, something that I have learnt personally at my ‘club’, by turning pressure into points, which I thought is the reason why Edinburgh pushed through at the end, alongside some excellent finishing from Ben Robbins’
Edinburgh and Borders now join forces at training on Sunday to form the ‘Edinburgh Rugby’ Red and Black squads to prepare for the pro alignment fixtures on the 14th. Caledonia put in a strong performance, especially in the forwards, against Glasgow on Wednesday and they now also combine to form ‘Glasgow Warriors’ White and Black. These games will be the last chance to promote themselves before players will be selected to attend the national trial on the 18th March. The exile players will also come into the mix following their selection fixture this weekend v Yorkshire in Leeds.
