Young Scots Finish On A High

Scotland under-18 29 Georgia under-18 10

Scotland under-18 completed their FIRA/AER European Championship campaign in fifth place having won two out of their three tournament matches following this victory over a physical Georgian side in Madrid this afternoon.

The result and performance means they bequeath to next year’s under-18 group their place in the elite division of the competition and that all pleased head coach Eddie Pollock and Scottish Rugby’s Head of Player Development Stephen Gemmell.  Pollock declared: “We managed to play the bulk of today’s game in their half.  Our kicking game was effective and we got ball out wide and scored some really good tries through clinical finishing by our backs.”

Gemmell noted: “To see this young team develop both as individuals and as a team during the course of this campaign is really pleasing.

“They will now transition into senior rugby and they cannot afford to take time to settle into adult rugby.  They need to get into clubs and establish themselves.  The summer is a big period for them both in terms of their skill and physical development.

“They faced a little bit of that today against a Georgian team that was very physical and very direct.”

Scotland scored five tries today to add to their victory against 35-12 Portugal in midweek and a highly creditable performance in a narrow 7-19 loss to France eight days ago.

The Scots’ tries today came from a hat-trick by full-back Gavin Lowe and a brace of tries from wing Sam Moncur.   Stand-off Ben Cooper landed two conversions.

Georgia’s tries both came from close-range, one from a driven lineout just before half-time when Scotland were leading 17-0 and the other from a rumble midway through the second-half when Scotland held a 22-5 advantage.

The Scots’ discipline was also good today, whereas Georgia had a player red-carded for kneeing in the closing stages.
