Rugby Novices Relish Taste Of Scotstoun Sevens Action

Pupils from Cleveden, St Rochs and Springburn High Schools, in Glasgow, were treated to watch Scotland 7s very first training session at Scotstoun Stadium today, ahead of the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 May.

For the Scotland 7s team it was their first chance to train at the venue where the eigth leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series will take place and for the school children, who are brought up deep in football mad Glasgow, it was their first chance to see the abbreviated game.

Glasgow City Development Officer, Ross Aitken, said: “Scotstoun is looking fantastic, we had three schools, who are all new to rugby this year, down watching the Scotland 7s training and they really enjoyed it.

“It’s been really insightful for the children to see how big the guys are and Scott Crawford (the team’s Strength and Conditioning coach) has spoken to them about nutrition, training and all the places they go across the world; it’s just so different to anything they have seen before.

“Hopefully today has inspired them to come along and see some more rugby in two weeks time.”

The team also did a question and answer session, which ended up as a sprinting competition between the pupils and Scotland 7s’ speediest player James Fleming, who was certainly put to the test.

In an interview with www.scottishrugby,org Colin Gregor, the team’s captain, gave his thoughts on how the stadium is shaping up. He said:  “It’s nice to be back in Glasgow and it makes a change the sun being out. The stadium is looking really good, I reckon the atmosphere will be excellent, come game day.”
