Great Britain Women’s team won the final of the World Student Games 7s in Brive, in the south of France, last night.
The squad, coached by Scotland’s Scott Forrest and involving two of his countrywomen, Glasgow University students Steph Johnston and Megan Gaffney, defeated France 24-7 in the final with Johnston among the try scorers. Gaffney was introduced to the tie from the bench. Earlier in the day GB had seen off the Italians 35-12 in the semi-final.
Johnston, a full-back in the XVs but utilised by Forrest on the wing in sevens, told www.scottishrugby.org said: “It was a tough final. France scored first and it was 7-all at half-time. Both Megan and I took a lot from it. It was great to be involved with a different group and, in some respects, it's a shame this was a stand alone competition.”
To reach the final GB defeated Romania, Japan and Spain in the pool stages and then accounted for Belgium in the quarter-finals and Italy in the semi-final.
