The Scotland 7s squad has been strengthened ahead of the new season which begins with the first leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Australia next month.
The squad now has 15 players signed up for the 2012/13 season – ten professionals and five elite development players – after two well-known faces from the abbreviated game in Scott Riddell and Michael Fedo were confirmed as the latest full-time professionals to come in on two year contracts.
Riddell, a former Scotland 7s captain and sportscotland Institute of Sport supported player who played his club rugby for Stewart’s Melville FP, said: “I’m really looking forward to putting everything I have got into sevens for the first time. I want to be the best I can be and hopefully by achieving that I can also help the team get the results we need on the field.”
Fedo, a product of the Howe of Fife / Bell Baxter HS youth system, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be in the squad on a full-time basis now. It’s going to be great going into the season fully fit having trained with the squad in pre-season and continuing doing so throughout the year.”
On the HSBC Sevens World Series circuit Scott Riddell currently has 18 caps and has scored 16 tries, while Fedo has 19 caps and 26 tries.
As well as Riddell and Fedo, 21-year-old, former joiner, Lewis Young comes in as an elite development player on a two year contract. Young has a wealth of experience on the Kings of the Sevens series with Jed-Forest and looks forward to making the step-up to the HSBC Sevens World Series.
He said: “This is a brilliant opportunity and I can’t wait to get started and get onto the series. It’s a massive step-up for me but I will take it as it comes and try to learn as much as I possibly can.”
Scotland 7s head coach, Phil Greening, said: “Scott [Riddell] and Michael [Fedo] have been core players in the Scotland 7s squad for the last few years and have always improved.
This is an opportunity for them to keep growing their skills in the game, get stronger and be a bigger part of the squad. Scott in particular has very good leadership skills and is a good example to the younger players.
“Lewis [Young] is the first player we have appointed who we look to be part of a new pathway scheme we want to develop. He, like Scott Riddell, is part of our ongoing partnership with the sportscotland Institute of Sport, our Scottish clubs and he is a great addition to this squad.”
Scottish Rugby works in partnership with sportscotland, the national agency for sport. In 2011, sportscotland invested a total of £156,000 of National Lottery funding into Scottish Rugby’s 7s programme. sportscotland also supports Scottish Rugby 7s by providing high performance expertise through its institute network.
