John Houston, the experienced 30-year-old centre/wing, is to join the Scotland 7s squad in Tokyo for round seven of the HSBC Sevens World Series this weekend.
Houston flew out from Edinburgh Airport this afternoon to replace Struan Dewar who has been ruled out of this weekend’s tournament due to a hamstring injury.
Scotland 7s head coach Stephen Gemmell said: “John will be a welcome addition when he meets us in Tokyo tomorrow (Tuesday), bringing his experience to the group.
“He was not available for initial selection due to the impending birth of his first child. However, now that his daughter, Layla, has arrived he is available to travel and has been brought in as the replacement.”
Houston, who made his Scotland 7s debut in 2005 and was part of the team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, said: “We’re working hard to bring consistency to our sevens game in what is one of the most open and competitive seasons on the world series circuit that we’ve seen.
“Basically any team is capable of beating any other side. I’m looking forward to getting out to Tokyo and joining up with the squad.”
Scotland are in Pool B in Tokyo and will face Kenya, Wales and USA on Saturday (30 March).
