Youth and experience in Edinburgh Rugby 7s squad

Tom Brown.Head coach Stevie Scott today named a blend of youth and experience in the Edinburgh Rugby 7s squad that will compete in the Gala 7s tournament at Netherdale this Saturday (first tie 3.30pm).

The club’s first outing in the Kings of the Sevens Series will signal a return home for stand-off Gregor Hunter, who will captain a side which features three full cap internationalists.

Outside back Tom Brown [pictured] - capped in Scotland’s away win over Australia last summer - 26-time capped Georgian internationalist, Dimitri Basilaia, and Netherlands wing Sep Visser will run out alongside some of the club’s top young talent.

Elite development player (EDP) George Turner has recovered from a hip injury to add his weight to the squad and will be joined by scrum-half Alex Black and wing Mike Penn.

The 10-man squad is completed by 20-year-old EDP scrum-half Murray McConnell and Scotland 7s squad players, Ross Miller (sportscotland institute supported player, Glasgow Hawks) and Joseva Nayacavou (Doncaster Knights), brought in for additional sevens exposure and game time.

Scott said: “The players are really looking forward to the tournament this weekend and have enjoyed the opportunity to focus a portion of this fallow training week on the specific skills required for an expansive sevens game.

“We’ve selected a good blend of physical ball carriers alongside bright young talent with a lot of pace and skill, with the plan to bring the two together and challenge for the title this Saturday.” -- interim head coach Stevie Scott.

Edinburgh Rugby 7s will face Heriot's and Peebles in the pool stages of the opening leg of the historic Borders sevens circuit, with results determining their opponents in the knockout rounds.

As is customary on the Kings of the Sevens circuit, refreshments and entertainment will be available throughout the day, creating an all day festival for fans on and off the pitch, leading up to the floodlit final at 7.45pm. The evening will then continue in the club’s Centenary Lounge, with free admission after the final.

Scott added: “Aside from the great rugby on the field, sevens tournaments are great all-day events off the pitch, so hopefully we’ll see a number of the club’s fans heading to Galashiels this weekend, not only to cheer us on but to enjoy a great day out.”

Tickets are available now from the club office on 01896 755145 or by email to info@galarfc.com.
