The finals of the under-18 Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Bowl and Plate competitions took place at Murrayfield this evening (23 April) as Morrison’s Academy and Marr College came away with the silverware.
The Bowl competition final saw Morrison’s Academy overcome Peebles High School in a thrilling encounter that ended 31-20. Despite trailing 20-19 at half-time, Morrison’s scored two unanswered tries after the break, through Ben Vardi and Iain Paterson, which was good enough to seal the victory.
Try scorers for Peebles on the day were David Campbell, Scott Halliday and Jack Harrison, and Morrison’s first half tries came through Calum Savage and a double from Matthew Tait.
To add to his two tries, Morrison’s flanker, Matthew Tait was crowned as man of the match thanks to an all round impressive display.
Speaking after the match, Morrison’s coach, Nigel Pennie expressed how proud he was of his team.
“They’ve put a lot of hard work in over the holiday and I’m delighted for them”
Meanwhile, on an adjacent pitch, Marr College defeated Galashiels Academy 21-13, to become under-18 Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Plate champions.
Galashiels came out the stronger of the two sides and found themselves 10-0 up in the first half through a try from Gary Robertson and the boot of Kieth Young.
However, Marr soon found their feet, and tries from Ben Johnston, Ali Hazel and Grant Baird, saw them streak to an unassailable lead, and the title was theirs.
The Plate final man of the match was awarded to Marr College flanker Lewis Anderson for an outstanding performance, in and out of contact.
Marr Coach spoke after the game saying “the boys were fantastic. They’ve been fantastic all year.”
"It’s been a roller-coaster year for them and I’m so glad it’s ended on a high”
