Rugby sevens welcomed to Glasgow City Centre

With only one week to go until the Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens returns to Scotstoun Stadium, Scottish Rugby once again teamed up with Emirates Live to bring a taste of the tournament to Glasgow City Centre today (Saturday 27 April).

People of all ages gathered in St Enoch’s Square for the free ‘Sevens in the City’ event, which offered rugby fans the opportunity to meet the Scotland 7s squad, get involved in rugby games and be the first to get their hands on both the HSBC Sevens World Series trophy and the Ned Haig Cup, which the 16 international teams will be battling for at Scotstoun Stadium next weekend (Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May).

On hand to take part in touch rugby sessions and sign autographs were Scotland 7s stars John Houston, James Fleming, Scott Riddell and Michael Fedo as well as Scotland internationals, Stuart Hogg, Sean Lamont and Sean Maitland.

Emirates’ UK Vice President, Laurie Berryman, said:  “Glasgow is one of our most important UK gateways and supporting this world class festival of rugby sevens is important for us, particularly ahead of next year’s Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, at which rugby sevens will feature heavily,”

“As a long term supporter of rugby sevens and a Commonwealth Games partner in 2014, we’re delighted to be helping the growth of the game and giving Glaswegians the opportunity to experience truly world class rugby on their doorstep. Glasgow has been our Scottish gateway since 2004, and we’re delighted to be giving something back to the city in the form of this event”.

Fans today also had the chance to get their photo taken, as part of a competition to win tickets for next weekend’s event, with the Scotland 7s and Scotland players who were posing in the window of neighbouring department store, House of Frasers, as famous film stars and manikins.

House of Fraser’s general manager, Paul Mitchell, said: “House of Fraser Glasgow is delighted to support Scottish Rugby with the promotion of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

“The tournament is a globally recognised event and having national players such as Sean Lamont within the Glasgow store is always an honour. We wish the boys the very best of luck in their forthcoming games.”
