Scotland under-20 have been forced to replace Aberdeen Grammar’s Alex Hagart in the 2013 Junior World Championship squad because of an ongoing back complaint.
With the tournament kicking off in a fortnight, the decision was taken to end the endeavors to rehabilitate the stand-off in time for the flagship age-grade competition.
He is replaced by Leeds Carnegie’s Ben Cooper, who impressed as a substitute in the Wednesday’s 24-21 warm-up loss to Ireland in Ashbourne.
Head coach Sean Lineen, said: “We’re all gutted for Alex [Hagart] who’s done everything in his power to make the championships.
“Naturally he’s very disappointed but he’s taken it very well and agrees it’s in the best interests of the team to take a player who’s fully fit.
“One of the reasons for our warm-up game against Ireland was to look at a couple of players and Ben [Cooper] showed up well.
“He’s delighted to have earned the call up and is a good fit for the squad.”
