This Friday (24 May), the second Glasgow Summer Social Rugby Series will take place at Burnbrae, the home of West of Scotland Rugby Club, in Milngavie (first kick-off 6.30pm).
Last Friday (17 May) the first event took place at Braidholm, GHA’s ground, in Glasgow’s southside.
The purpose of the events are to target rugby players and teams who have had little opportunity to play competitively throughout the season and at a time that may be better suited to their daily commitments. Therefore, in recent weeks it has been advertised predominantly to second XV, third XV and vets teams.
At Braidholm, players from GHA, West of Scotland, Cartha Queen’s Park, Jordanhill Phoenix and Hamilton turned out to get involved, with the Laigh Bent side, Hamilton, bringing a total of 26 players.
Teams played two 30-minute matches with 15 minutes halves, with no scores kept to emphasize the informal element of the event.
Event organiser and Scottish Rugby’s partnership project development officer, Kris Burney, said: "The Summer Social Rugby Series gives those players who can't commit to full time training and playing a chance to still enjoy the game and it was brilliant to have around 70 players turn-out last Friday for our first event.
“All players who have been involved so far have commented that this is something they see being very worthwhile and enjoyable and something they can look forward to over the coming weeks. Hopefully along with some good weather too!"
