Ayr Rugby Academy at Ayr Rugby Club has recently secured funding to help to develop young rugby talents from socially deprived backgrounds in its catchment area.
Some £2,000 has been given to the club’s academy by the Ayr Community Rugby Trust which funds a series of projects throughout South Ayrshire and the work of club development officer, Stuart Fenwick, in the town and surrounding areas’ schools.
Ayr Rugby Academy manager, Colin White, said: “ With Stuart’s success coaching rugby at school level, we’re seeing rising participation numbers of young players.
“As a result the rugby club has been able to bring those players, sometimes very new to the sport, into our own academy.
“After players have been identified they work on areas of technical and tactical aspects on the pitch in small groups, as well as gaining nutritional advice and education, sport psychology support, video analysis work and individualised programmes that target the areas of weakness in their game. We encourage them to set goals and work on those aspects in their own time and during their time at the Academy sessions.
“Along with everyone at the club I’m very thankful to the Trust for their support in helping us develop young players in South Ayrshire.”
