2012/13 RBS Premiership runners-up Gala have signed-up a number of new personnel for the forthcoming season.
The Borderers have signed Jed-Forest’s Ewan Scott and Musselburgh’s David O’Hagen for the new season as they seek to fill the void left by stand-off Lee Millar’s move to London Scottish.
The Netherdale club have also strengthened their pool of goal kickers with the return of the pacey Graham Spiers who has completed a three-year degree course at Gloucester University.
Gala’s back division will benefit too from the addition of Liam Draycott from Currie, the exciting young Hawick back three player, Craig Russell who joins the Maroons after a short spell with Biggar, and the return of Zimbabwean sevens cap Gerald Sibanda following a successful operation on his shoulder.
In the forwards, Gala will again have the services of the influential former Borders professional Opeta Palepoi, back five player David Marshall, who is another to recover from a successful shoulder operation, and new front row signings Rory Sutherland, the ex-Biggar, Hawick and Scotland under-19 cap, and Worthing Raiders prop Jack Stillwell.
Gala are also anticipating that a number of graduates from Gala Wanderers, runners-up to Stirling County in the Youth League Cup final, will add to the competition for first and second team places, among them Blair Reavely, Keith Young, Bill Easson, Kieran Bennet, Michael Blackwood and Liam Scott.
As well as Millar, half back Danny Owenson has left the Gala club, opting to return to Musselburgh and front row Martin Christie is moving to Watsonians.
Gala will be led this season by their Scotland club international scrum half George Graham whose father and namesake will continue as head coach, assisted by Scott Nichol. Former Lions and Scotland full back, Peter Dods has now taken over the role of first team manager and Gary Isaac has joined Steven Headspeath in the first XV back-up squad while Bruce Millar has been appointed as fitness coach. Chris Dalgleish and Ewan Johnston continue as the second XV coaching team.
